Chapelle Saint-Nicodème et Notre-Dame-de-la-Rosée

Quéven

Dimensions
In the village of Saint-Nicodème, about a kilometre south-west of the village of Quéven, the rectangular chapel, ringed by a stone bench, stands next to its fountain and washhouse.
Period
1578, the date borne above the south door; reworked in the 18th century; restorations of 1832.
What stands there
A pardon chapel with two dedications, whose fountain is built of old standing stones set beneath a cross.

In the village of Saint-Nicodème, the chapel carries two names: Notre-Dame-de-la-Rosée, its former dedication, and Saint-Nicodème, which has gradually supplanted it. Above the south door can be read the date 1578, with the inscription IESVS. It is a building of dressed stone, rectangular with a flat chevet, with pointed-arch windows fitted with flamboyant mullions and basket-handle doors. An incomplete date above the west door indicates reworking in the 18th century; it may have been then that the sloped buttresses were added to the south-east, meant to hold back the south wall, which was leaning under the pressure of the slope. The last restorations, dated 1832, are inscribed on the paving and on the bell turret. A stone bench runs all the way round. Notre-Dame-de-la-Rosée was one of the frairies of the old parish of Quéven. Beside it stand a devotional fountain and a washhouse edged with dressed stone. What is unusual about the fountain is that the Inventaire describes it as 'formed of standing lec'hs', the tallest topped by a concrete cross: these standing stones, which abbé Le Mené called 'ancient tombstones', were reused and Christianised at a date that is not known. Inside, InfoBretagne records two 18th-century polychrome wooden statues, Saint Isidore and the Virgin, and the Inventaire photographs a statue which it identifies, with a question mark, as Saint Nicodème.
