Chapelle de Coat ar Roch, ermitage de saint Edern
Lannédern
Away from the village of Lannédern, at the place called Coat ar Roch, «le bois du rocher», the Latin-cross chapel keeps inside it what makes the place singular: in a side aisle separated from the nave by octagonal columns, a spring gushes from a rock that emerges from the floor. Near the building stands a faceted monolithic cross, on a square base with a three-stepped plinth; inside stand statues of Saint Maudez, Our Lady, Saint Joseph and Saint Francis Xavier. The dating is not settled: InfoBretagne describes a building of the early 16th century, while the date 1699 can be read at the base of the bell chamber; the last major early restoration dates from 1874, and the chapel received in 1910 the dual dedication to Our Lady and Saint Maudez. The spring was held to be miraculous and people came there seeking healing, of the eyes especially, it is said. Tradition places here the hermitage of Saint Edern, who came from the Island of Britain: guided by a star according to the commune, he is said to have settled near the spring, and a stag pursued by hunting dogs is said to have taken refuge with him, hence the image of the saint riding a stag that is found in the parish church.
