Cathédrale Saint-Pierre-et-Saint-Paul de Nantes
Nantes
Nantes was the capital of the Namnetes, a Celtic Gaulish people settled between the Loire and the Vilaine whose very name gave the city its own — a direct legacy of the Celtic occupation of Armorica from the 5th century BC. A cathedral already stood on this site long before the present Gothic building, begun only in 1434: Bishop Felix, called by the people of Nantes themselves to succeed Bishop Eumerius, completed its construction and was buried there in 582 — proof of a continuous Christian place of worship on this site since the early Middle Ages. The present cathedral, whose construction stretched over four centuries, houses the sumptuous Renaissance tomb of the last independent Duke of Brittany, Francis II, and his wife Marguerite de Foix, carved by Michel Colombe.
