Basilique Saint-Epvre de Nancy
Nancy
Despite its very medieval appearance, this flamboyant Gothic-style basilica in fact dates only from the second half of the 19th century, built during the neo-Gothic revival championed by figures such as Viollet-le-Duc. It replaces a much older church, founded as early as 1080 by Duke Thierry II of Lorraine on the same site. Its stone, quarried from the Meuse hills at Euville near Commercy, stands out for its fine, very white grain. Among its furnishings, an altar dedicated to Our Lady of Perpetual Help was donated by Emperor Franz Joseph of Austria and his wife, Empress Sisi.
