What stands there
the youngest cathedral in France as an episcopal seat

Built in the 18th century in local pink sandstone to the plans of the king's engineer Jacques Philippe Mareschal, this parish church became a basilica in 1952 and a cathedral only in 1979, on the creation of the diocese of Belfort-Montbéliard — which makes it, as a bishop's seat, the youngest cathedral in France. Its monumental gallery organ, built between 1749 and 1752 by the organ-builder Jean-Baptiste Waltrin, has come through nearly three centuries without interruption.
