Cathédrale Saint-Caprais d'Agen
Agen
Built in the 12th century on the remains of a 5th-century basilica dedicated to the local martyr Saint Caprais (Caprasius), executed in the early 4th century alongside Saint Faith (Sainte Foy). A simple collegiate church for centuries, it only became the cathedral of Agen in 1802, after the Revolution had destroyed the city's former cathedral of Saint-Étienne, now vanished without visible trace — making Agen one of the few French cities no longer to possess its original historic cathedral. Its great organ, one of the largest in Lot-et-Garonne with 45 stops, is said by local tradition to have been given by the Empress Eugénie in 1858.
