Vieux Cazaubon
Cazaubon
In the Bas-Armagnac, Cazaubon superimposes two villages: Vieux Cazaubon, a medieval village of arcades and half-timbered houses, and Barbotan-les-Thermes, a spa town born of the hot springs. Vieux Cazaubon, dated to the 13th century, has been classed as a bastide; it grew up beside the castle of the lords of Cazaubon, descendants of Frédelon, Count of Gaure, then of the Lisle-Jourdain family, and became a walled town when Philip the Fair granted it rights and franchises. Two gates remain, the porte du Hourrat to the west and the porte d'Uzan to the south. Reverting to the crown after the hanging in Paris, in 1323, of the brigand son of Jourdain V, the lordship was ceded to the Count of Armagnac. At Barbotan, the church of Saint-Pierre, built on piles above the hot mud, also serves as a town gate.
