Bastide de Rimont
Rimont
On a hill between Saint-Girons and La Bastide-de-Sérou, Rimont is a bastide founded in 1272 by Eustache de Beaumarchais, seneschal of Toulouse, on the king's behalf, under a paréage contract with the abbot of Combelongue. The name is read either as "the smiling hill" or as "the stream coming down from the mountain", the village's situation on its height arguing for the first hypothesis. The church was built in the same year as the bastide, in 1272; its bell-tower, begun in 1769, and its 19th-century frescoes accompany five paintings by the Pedoya painters. The antiquity of the site is attested by Gallo-Roman amphorae, by coins from the time of Charlemagne and by the abbey of Combelongue, founded in 1138 in the valley of the Baup, whose abbey church of Saint-Laurent and restored mill can be visited a few kilometres away.
