Bastide de Grenade-sur-l'Adour
Grenade-sur-l'Adour
Grenade-sur-l'Adour is a port bastide founded on 2 May 1322 on the bank of the Adour by Jeanne d'Artois, viscountess of Béarn and of Marsan, in paréage with the commander of the hospital of Saint-Antoine de Goloni. Its name, Terra granata, is said to evoke a wheat-bearing land, and its reason for being was to export the produce of the Marsan by the river. The rectangle within the walls, two hundred and thirty metres by a hundred and forty, defended by the Adour, a wall and a ditch, is ordered around a very large square of seventy-five metres by seventy, the place des Tilleuls, which has kept part of its covered arcades and its timber-framed fronts. The Gothic church of Saint-Pierre-et-Saint-Paul, of the 15th century, received in 1833 a front with two towers, classified. A stopping place of Charles VII in 1422, taken by the Protestants in 1569, Grenade remains a living town of the Landes Adour.
