Chapelle Saint-They

Cléden-Cap-Sizun

Dimensions
a few metres from the cliffs — approximate position (Pointe du Van)
Period
15th century, rebuilt in the 17th
What stands there
the largest chapel in Cléden, 2 devotional fountains

Standing like a figurehead at the very tip of the Pointe du Van, between the Pointe du Raz and the mysterious Baie des Trépassés, this chapel dedicated to an obscure 4th-century saint has defied the storms of the Raz de Sein for centuries. An old Breton hymn expresses the wish: "May the little chapel by the sea long remain standing, so that Saint They from his doorway may watch the boats go by..." The neighbouring bay, called "des Trépassés" (of the departed), takes its name from legends of drowned sailors and the mythical city of Ys.
