Château de Jaure et fontaine Saint-Firmin
Jaure
Jaure is a very small village between Villamblard and Saint-Astier. Its château, raised in the 14th century with two square towers and an enclosure, received round towers in the 15th and was embellished in the 16th and 17th centuries; in 1376 the marshal Louis de Sancerre took it for the king of France. A fire ravaged it in the 19th century and the Russian general Nikolai Obruchev, who had bought the estate in 1866, had the residential range rebuilt. There survive a vaulted cellar of the 14th century and a dovecote-tower of the 15th, tall and narrow. But, as the tourist office of the Isle valley writes, the interest of Jaure lies above all in its fountain, dedicated to Saint Firmin, a place of pilgrimage since the Middle Ages.
