Chapelle Saint-Jacques

Tréméven

Dimensions
15th-16th-century chapel in local granite, associated with a separate devotional fountain, protected in its own right as a monument historique (historic monument).
Period
15th-16th centuries
What stands there
Chapel listed as a monument historique by decree of 24 April 1909; fountain listed on 2 March 1912

Dedicated to Saint James the Greater, patron of the pilgrims of Compostela, this chapel at Tréméven perpetuates a devotion still very much alive: the pardon of Saint-Jacques, the Breton pilgrimage festival, is still celebrated there every year and features in the calendar of religious feasts of the Trégor-Goëlo, with mass and a procession to the neighbouring fountain, itself listed as a monument historique (historic monument) as early as 1912. The double heritage protection — chapel in 1909, fountain in 1912 — testifies to the long-standing attachment to this ensemble, which belongs to the commune. The existence of a "Boucle de Saint-Jacques", a walking circuit that today links the chapel to other points of local heritage, keeps alive the memory of its probable role as a waymark on the Breton routes to Compostela, dotted with numerous chapels dedicated to the apostle. For the visitor, the interest lies as much in the elegant sobriety of 15th-16th-century rural architecture as in the persistence, rare for so small a building, of a documented annual pardon and an associated devotional fountain that is still maintained. Here one finds that mixture characteristic of Breton pilgrimage chapels: the cult of the patron saint of travellers, water reputed to do good, and a popular festival that still sets the rhythm of the commune's life.
