Église templière Notre-Dame de Puyravault

Puyravault

Dimensions
12th-century Templar church, rectangular plan with a single barrel-vaulted nave (about 21 × 9 m).
Period
Templar chapel founded in the 12th century within the commandery of Puyravault, also serving as the parish church. National property at the Revolution, owned by the commune since 1829. Registered as a monument historique in 1991.
What stands there
church preserved in its entirety and still in use; Romanesque facade with diamond-point ornament, Gothic portal dated 1549/1552, bell "MARIE" of 1744 listed as a historic object

Regarded, in the commune's words, as "the only witness to the Templar presence in the Vendée", the church of Notre-Dame de Puyravault was at once the chapel of the commandery and the parish church — an arrangement in which the Templar commander himself appointed the parish priest. The facade has kept its 12th-century Romanesque arch with diamond-point decoration, while a Gothic portal still bears the dates 1549 and 1552 carved during a 16th-century rebuilding. Still a working parish church today, it can be visited freely.
