3 km east of Cosne-Cours-sur-Loire, the commandery of Villemoison forms an exceptionally complete 12th-century Templar ensemble: a Romanesque chapel with a semi-domed apse, adorned with capitals with floral decoration and a fresco of Christ in Majesty, an L-shaped prior's lodging, and a barn. A certain Geoffroy de Charnay served here as preceptor in 1294 — twenty years later he would die at the stake alongside the last Grand Master, Jacques de Molay. Passed to the Hospitallers in 1312 and sold as national property at the Revolution, it can be visited today in groups on Wednesday afternoons in summer.
