Serches

Dimensions
13th-century chapel remodelled in the late 15th century (original Gothic portal reused), residential block and barn preserved.
Period
13th-century chapel, damaged during the Hundred Years' War then rebuilt on a reduced footprint in the late 15th century. Became a Hospitaller commandery after 1312.
What stands there
1 chapel (two-bay nave, seven-sided polygonal choir), 1 residential block, 1 barn

The chapel of the former commandery of Mont-de-Soissons, at Serches, retains a simple plan: a two-bay nave and a seven-sided polygonal choir. The Romanesque-Gothic building of the 13th century, damaged during the Hundred Years' War, was restored in the late 15th century on a reduced footprint, but its fine 13th-century portal — capitals with floral decoration, liturgical piscina — was carefully reused on the new facade. The dwelling and the barn also survive. The whole, registered as a monument historique in 1927, benefited from restoration campaigns supported by the Sauvegarde de l'Art Français in 1988 and 1989.
