Morlaix

Dimensions
Remains of a bell tower that once rose to 34 metres, with four pyramidal pinnacle turrets
Period
Late 14th – early 15th century, Marian dedication in 1424
What stands there
Bell given by the duke of Brittany in 1425

Dated to the very last years of the 14th century or the very beginning of the 15th from the coats of arms combining Brittany, France and Navarre that are still visible, this chapel was officially dedicated to the Virgin in 1424, the duke of Brittany giving it a bell the following year. Its slender 34-metre bell tower, capped with four pyramidal pinnacle turrets, was toppled several times by lightning and rebuilt thanks to the gifts of the faithful. A great centre of Marian pilgrimage, it drew processions from all over Brittany, notably at Candlemas, before being absorbed into the enclosure of the Carmelite convent of Morlaix. Only remains survive today, registered as monuments historiques, recalling the importance of this vanished sanctuary.

Getting there : Remains visible from the public road, within the enclosure of the Carmel
