Kevelaer

Dimensions

Period
Sanctuary born in the mid-17th century
What stands there
One of the principal pilgrimages of north-western Germany

Kevelaer was born small and has stayed small at its centre: the object of devotion is an engraving a few centimetres across, an image of the Virgin known as Our Lady of Luxembourg, housed in a tiny chapel around which the whole town has arranged itself. The sanctuary took shape in the mid-17th century, against the backdrop of the Thirty Years' War, and it has become one of the principal places of pilgrimage in north-western Germany.
