Loreto

Dimensions
93 m long, 60 m wide, 75.6 m at its highest point
Period
Relic said to have been brought from Nazareth in 1294; basilica built from 1468 to 1587
What stands there
1 stone house enshrined beneath the dome

The basilica was not built near a relic: it was built around one. At the centre of the building stands a small stone house, the Santa Casa, which tradition says was brought from Nazareth in 1294. Work began in 1468 under the bishop of Recanati, Pope Paul II took it over from 1469, and it was completed in 1587 — more than a century to envelop a single three-walled room.
