Hewn into the limestone cliff overlooking the Gironde estuary, the monolithic hermitage of Mortagne-sur-Gironde is among the oldest religious troglodyte sites in the south-west. The first cavities are said to have been developed from natural caves as early as the 2nd-3rd centuries, in the very first age of Christianity in Gaul. Local tradition attributes the founding of the hermitage to Saint Martial, who is said to have come here regularly to withdraw and pray — a hagiographic account, not historically proven, which links this isolated place to one of the legendary evangelisers of Aquitaine, as is often the case for many medieval hermitages. Around this retreat, a small monastic community grew up and gradually enlarged the caves; according to the archaeologist Charles Connoué, the church itself, entirely hewn from the rock, is thought to date from the 9th century. In the 11th century, the site served as a stopping point on a secondary route of the pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela, with pilgrims coming to venerate the memory of the founding saint before continuing on towards Spain. A community of Recollect monks lived there until the Revolution. Even today, a statue of Saint Martial, flanked by that of Saint Anthony the Hermit, watches over the dim light of the rock-cut chapel. The hermitage has been a listed historic monument since 1987.
