Tucked into a wooded side-valley of the Marne, Vignory preserves one of the most precious witnesses to the beginnings of Romanesque art in France. The church of Saint-Étienne was raised in the first half of the 11th century at the initiative of Gui, first lord of Vignory, who founded a collegiate church there; his son handed it shortly afterwards to the Benedictines of Saint-Bénigne of Dijon, whose priory it became. Consecrated around 1054 by the Bishop of Langres, it has come through nearly a thousand years without losing its character: a long timber-roofed nave with three levels of elevation — great arcades, false triforium, clerestory windows —, a choir with ambulatory among the oldest to survive, rough-hewn capitals where animals and interlace of a still pre-Romanesque spirit disport themselves. Architectural historians, from Prosper Mérimée to the scholars of the Bulletin monumental, very early made it a textbook case, and the building was listed among the first generation of monuments historiques. Its chapels also house remarkable statuary of the 14th and 15th centuries from the workshop known as "Vignory-Joinville", including Virgins and Child long surrounded by popular devotion. Above the village, a Petite Cité de Caractère, stand watch the ruins of the lords' castle and its 15th-century gun tower, reputed the largest medieval castle tower in the Grand Est: a lord-and-priory ensemble that has remained astonishingly legible.
